Sound composition for water fleas

2016
Video and sound composition

The water fleas, also known as Daphnias, are very small arthropods that have just one eye and feed on microscopic algae. Nowadays there are three species on the brink of extinction one native to South Africa and the other two native to Australia.

According to their speed movement and size I composed sound for the water fleas previously filmed in three different tones using a Vietnamese instrument called mouth harp. The water fleas where collected in a town near Bogotá called Facatativá.

This project was developed during the microscopic photography workshop led by Maria José Leaño, textile designer and microscope photography teacher at the Andes University of Colombia, and offered by the Gilberto Alzate Avendaño Foundation.

In this case, not all of the microorganisms are water flees but as the project was first inspired by these arthropods, the title stayed the same.
