Lepidoptera knitting

2017
SEM electron microscopy photographs

Three SEM electron microscopy photographs from the inside part of three different chrysalides. The first one is a cocoon from Bombyx mori or silk moth, the second one is a cocoon from Tineola bisselliella or weaving moth, and the third one is a cocoon from a Psychidae or bag moth. Under each image on a ledge, is the real equivalent chrysalis.

The work tries to understand and analyze the knitting pattern of three different caterpillar species, which shows besides the differences a common characteristic of the triangle formation. This form of textile creation would denote a very efficient way to create a tissue utilizing the least amount of material.
